We completely get it, when you hear the words Clearing it might send a little shudder down your spine. From securing your university place to finding accommodation - it can be a tad stressful to say the least! We wanted to take a bit of the stress away by taking you through what will happen on Clearing day; a step by step guide. Clearing is open from June 30th however, most people tend to apply once they have got their results confirmed.
Step 1 - The Night Before
The night before you get your A Level results most universities will release the places that they have available – this will give you a good idea of what courses you could potentially get a place on and which universities have spare spot for you. You will find these across national media and online. If you did not apply through UCAS and think you may decide to go for a space through Clearing, some universities will still expect a Personal Statement, so make sure this is ready just in case!
Step 2 - The Morning
You will be able to find out your confirmed places from 8am on UCAS Track, although you might prefer to wait until your slot at college or sixth form to get your results on paper.
Step 3 - You’ve Got Your Results
Okay, this is where the Clearing process starts. If you don’t get the grades you need for the conditional offers; want to withdraw from your previous choices; didn’t quite get the grades you expected; or haven’t previously applied through UCAS you will need to go through Clearing. If you previously applied through UCAS check your status before you act on anything, as if it doesn’t show ‘You Are in Clearing’ or ‘Clearing Has Started’ you may still be being considered by your university – call the university if you’re unsure. If you didn’t apply through UCAS, this will be called a ‘Record of Prior Acceptance’. You will follow the same steps and the university will finalise an application with UCAS afterwards.
Step 4 - Making the Call
To start the Clearing process, you will have to contact the universities you are interested in directly; most have a dedicated Clearing Helpline as this can be a busy day! Try and stay calm, as the phone lines will probably be busy and it may take a little while to get through. Keep hold of your results as you’ll need these on the phone, it can sometimes be handy to write down the UCAS points value of your results too. Again, stay calm; if you meet the requirements some universities will pass you through to speak to an administrator – think of this as a mini interview. You can call as many universities as you want and this is available right up until 23rd October although available places will reduce significantly by this point!
Step 5 - Verbal Offers
You got it! The university offered you a verbal offer – congrats! At this point you may even have multiple verbal offers depending on how many you called. Each university will have given you a code that is unique to your application.
Step 6 - Making Your Decision
This is the tough bit. UCAS Track only allows one Clearing application so you will need to pick just one verbal offer to proceed with. You will be able to proceed from 3pm on the 16th August and have 24 hours to do so or your verbal offer may be retracted.
Step 7 - The Wait
Okay this bit can be a little tough too… The wait! The universities have 24 hours to confirm your place through UCAS. If you don’t hear from them within this time period you can then add another clearing choice.
Step 8 - You Got It!
24 hours will have passed and fingers crossed you got the place you’re after. Now it’s time to get cracking – first stop: Student Finance, second stop: Student accommodation. Whilst we can’t help with the student finance, YPP are able to help you secure the perfect university accommodation in some cities. If you’ve got a spot at any universities around Liverpool, Manchester,York, Leeds and Sheffield and haven’t yet sorted your student accommodation – read on!
Step 9 - Securing Your Student Accommodation

We have a mix of shared apartments, studios, one and two-beds and many of our buildings also have an option of having your bills included too. In some buildings you’ll even have the luxury of a concierge service, a gym and social areas – cool right? We told you being a latecomer wasn’t so bad!
There you have it. Our 9-step guide to results and Clearing day. This day can be stressful but choosing your accommodation doesn’t have to be! You can find more information via the links provided or if you’d prefer, call us on 0113 2444 666 or email us at email@example.com.
